"Your reason and your passion are the rudder and the sails of your seafaring soul. If either your sails or your rudder be broken, you can but toss and drift, or else be held at a standstill in mid-seas. For reason, ruling alone, is a force confining: and passion, unattended, is a flame that burns to its own destruction"

My Story so far:
Being born into a military family meant that my childhood was punctuated by regular moves around the UK, routinely changing schools and making new friends. Boarding school brought some stability, but generated its own issues. Since leaving full-time education, my working life has been a mix of choice, opportunity and luck. Not all of my plans have come to fruition, though better things have happened when I have said yes than when I have held back.
There were many times when I found myself alone in the deep end and had to learn fast how best to stay afloat. While this was not ideal, looking back it was better than staying only in the shallows where I could keep my feet on the bottom.
My most satisfying experiences have always been when I am able to support people in overcoming the obstacles that prevent them from achieving their true potential.

My Real World Experience:
I have spent the last 20 years working in Primary Health Care in the not for profit sector. For a dozen years I was CEO of a Social Enterprise providing urgent primary care around the clock for a million Londoners. In addition to the routine challenges of running a growing organisation, I rebuilt our reputation following a nationally reported clinical incident, weathered numerous financial crises, and led a successful bid for our core contract. During that time I was also an adviser at the Department of Health and the local SHA and continued my work as an Independent Therapeutic Counsellor.
In my work with the DH I provided consultancy support to Healthcare Providers, NHS Commissioners and Regulators across London ensuring that services were properly structured, efficiently managed, and able to report against standardised measures for performance and governance.
As well as developing the Board Structure for my own organisation, I took part in a wide range of committees and attended many diverse planning and operational working groups. A common experience across many of these groups was the frustration that comes from focussing solely on carrying out the task without considering the different approaches of the individual members of the group and how these impact on their collective ability to deliver what was needed.
I recently spent two years as an elected Trustee and Board Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy which included time as the organisation's Deputy Chair.
Experience has taught me that it is not possible to separate our personal and professional identities and that through a better understanding of each we can create a powerful synergy that produces improved results at work and greater personal satisfaction.
