Couples Counselling:
Couples counselling is for any two people in a relationship. That relationship may be as a heterosexual or same-sex couple or it may be a family relationship such as a brother and sister or mother and daughter. Relationship counselling can also be helpful to people at work such as business partners and other work colleagues.
For me couples counselling differs from individual counselling in that the primary objective is to ensure that each person within the relationship is able to clearly communicate their thoughts and emotions to the other. To be able to do this we need to understand exactly what we are feeling. We then need to find the right words to describe these feelings so that the other person can truly understand what we mean. This requires each person to find the courage to speak about what is troubling them.
Each person within a relationship has a story to tell and each story is equally valid. Creating a safe space for these to emerge creates an opportunity for people to really listen to each other and both appreciate and accept what the other person is experiencing.
Counselling can help people to communicate their feelings, wants and desires so that they can be better understood by the other person. If we are able to hear what is being said and to accept and understand the experience of the other person, then we can begin to find a better and more satisfying way of being together.
