How Personal Development Coaching Works for Boards:
Personal Development Coaching for Boards is a customised programme based upon observations of the Board at work alternating with individual debriefings with participants. Depending upon the frequency of Board meetings, this cycle can be repeated for a period of between 6 and 12 months.
Observations focus on the quality and dynamics of the many interactions that take place during meetings, concentrating on the how rather than the what of the Board's business. Debriefings provide an opportunity to explore individual experiences, looking at how each person contributes to the dialogue in its widest sense and how their actions, or inaction, help to shape the dynamics of each exchange. We look at each individual's desires, intentions and aspirations for themselves and the organisation and how these are played out in real-time within the Boardroom.
Individuals are supported in making their personal and organisational goals explicit and developing effective communication strategies to negotiate them into becoming priorities for the team.
Repeating this cycle over several months creates an iterative process which increases individual and collective understanding through continuous reflection on the group dialogue. Successive meetings become opportunities to explore different approaches in real-time that can then be reviewed for their effectiveness. Sometimes only minor adjustments are needed to bring the Board into balance, while other situations require major structural shifts for positive creative energy to flow. The majority of Board Members will have a good insight into where they lie on this spectrum.
There is a solid argument for this form of support to be an ongoing and integral part of every Board experience, though few would relish this level of continuous scrutiny even if the resources where available. The process can work equally well with other groups within the organisation such as executive committees.
