Is Counselling Confidential?
To encourage clients to freely explore all aspects of their lives, it is important that a high degree of confidentiality is maintained. This is a key part of the BACP Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions.
However, in certain rare situations it may be necessary to break confidentiality and this will be discussed at the first meeting. These are considered to be situations where it is believed that a crime is likely to be committed or if someone, including the client, is going to be put at risk. Although extremely unlikely, if I felt there was a requirement to break confidentiality, then the client would be informed
I keep electronic records of the sessions which are stored securely in the line with the General Data Protection Regulation and BACP best practice.
